With AUTONOMY OF THE INNER , Petra Fiebig, Patricia Lambertus, and Barbara Rosengarth present three independent positions that explore space, interior, and interior as mental, pictorial, and architectural constructions. At the heart of their work lies the question of how inner images, spaces of memory, and built environments become visible—not as mere representation, but as an experience situated between surface and depth, ornament and architecture, perception and projection.

The Hawerkamp exhibition hall becomes a space for three distinct artistic approaches: precise drawing, kaleidoscopic painting, and digitally generated installation. Together, the works explore space not as a static entity, but as something continuously constructed through images, bodies, memory, and perception.

In her paintings, Barbara Rosengarth explores the relationship between surface and space. From intricate patterns emerge rhythmically fractured systems that shift, tilt, and disrupt our perceptual habits. Her works are reminiscent of wallpaper, yet defy a purely decorative interpretation, becoming optical spaces with their own inherent order.

Patricia Lambertus uses wallpaper as a base for large-scale installations. In baroque-like opulence, she creates imaginary spaces that simultaneously appear familiar—as if stored in our collective visual memory. Flat elements and freestanding displays deliberately create a sense of three-dimensionality, blurring the boundaries between stage, backdrop, and real space.

Petra Fiebig uses graphite drawings to create delicate surfaces and finely differentiated shades of gray. Interior settings are recurring motifs in her work. Her installations combine three-dimensional objects with large-format drawings, creating dense spatial images in which materiality and illusion intertwine.

AUTONOMY OF THE INNER understands space as an inner and outer construction: as something that unfolds between image and environment, memory and present, projection and fact.
