“Varel Cycle” – a visual narrative of the fragility of environment, tradition and identity
The "Varel Cycle" is an artistic work that thematically explores the concepts of environment, tradition, and identity. The work aims to examine and visualize the fragility and interconnectedness of these themes.
For her artistic exploration, Patricia Lambertus focused on the traditional crab fishing with horses, a practice recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. By depicting this tradition, the Varel Cycle aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection and cultural heritage, and to bring this historical craft into the present day.
Traditional crab fishing on horseback is not only a cultural practice deeply rooted in European history, but also symbolizes a unique harmony between humans, animals, and nature. This craft, which has existed for approximately 500 years, illustrates the respectful use of natural resources and exemplifies sustainable environmental practices. It also constantly demonstrates that change and further development are ongoing.
The crab fishermen and their surroundings are distorted in the images using artistic techniques, highlighting our vulnerability. The images convey an atmospheric, dystopian mood. Flooded architecture and people affected by climate change are visible in the background.
The confrontation between the idyllic depiction of nature and its dystopian transformation under the pressure of human influences and climatic changes becomes visible here.
